How we got our numbers:
Each Posse member kept track of the number of books they were bringing to the festival. The day of the festival, they were asked how many books they brought.

The Akron Reading Festival, held on 7th February 2009, was not only a triumph for the people of Akron and the surrounding areas, but a RECORD breaking release for the Rubber City Book Posse.
In 2008, 625 books were released at the festival. The RCBP set a goal for at least 1,000 books to be donated, however with hard work, dedication and the giving nature of bookcrossers around the world, we came to the festival with 3,288 books–and all of those books went to good, reading homes!

The RCBP broke history. And lucky people in Akron and surrounding areas were the beneficiaries. Look for more details to come.

We discussed the National Film Challenge last weekend at our meeting. For those of you who might not know, the National Film Challenge is a nationwide film challenge where participants agree to write, block, film and edit a whole movie in a weekend (this weekend actually). Anyway, since the registration is ridiculous, we’re not officially doing it, but what we are doing is making a movie…Tomorrow (Saturday October 25) and we’d LOVE for you to attend.

Yes, that’s right. We’re making a movie in a day. It’ll be quick and painless, that’s all I will promise. I’m thinking we’ll convene around 11 or noon at the Panera in the Target plaza and group together, then run off to a local area to film. You won’t need to bring much, just yourself, a pencil/pen, some creativity, a little penache and some moxie!

If you have an extension cord or a camera, that might be a plus, too.

Anyway, we’d love to see you there and make a movie. Everyone participating will get a copy of the final project and they can burn it or screen it at their vacation home in Sundance for Bobby Redford, if they want–we don’t care. It’s just a way for us to show the world that the RCBP is amazing and wonderful and…awesome!

The meeting isn’t even over and I’m already posting a picture.

We may joke about the amount of books we have on our ever expanding Mt. TBRs. We may also joke about having thousands of books still to register and release. However, there’s one member of the Rubber City Book Posse that’s registered and released over 7,000 books. I got the opportunity to talk to that Bookcrosser (Tribefan) over the summer about her amazing bookcrossing efforts.

GothamGal: What initially led you to bookcrossing?
Tribefan: My sister (missmaddycat) sent me an e-mail one day with a link to bookcrossing as said she thought it would be something I would like!

GG: Where do you get your books?
TF: Thrift stores, library sales, PBS (Paperbackswap.com), yard sales, trades with other Bcers, any of my friends from work who just want to get rid of some books…

GG: How many books do you read in a year/month/week/day/etc?
TF: So far this year I’ve read (as of May 20th) 81 books. 8 in Jan, 17 in Feb, 9 in March, 10 in April, 21 in May, so far in June 16!

GG: When did you hit 7,000 books registered? With what title?
TF: Monday, May 19, 2008 “Raven” by Charles L. Grant

GG: Do you read all the books you get?
TF: Not possible!

GG: What is the most memorable book you’ve read?
TF: The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. I have read this Trilogy at least 8 times and it is still the only book(s) to make me cry!

GG: What books/authors have you found specifically through bookcrossing?
TF: The entire world of the cozy mystery! I never read this genre until BC!

GG: How many releases do you do? (is it weekly, monthly, etc)?
TF: It is basically whenever I feel like wild releasing. I try to always carry books with me to wild release and I have to pick my mail up at the Post Office every day so I do a lot of wild releasing there! Since joining BC though, the least I’ve ever wild released in a month is 11 (Feb 2006 and April 2007). The most I’ve ever released in a month is 190 (Sep 2006).

The RCBP met at Primo’s Deli in Akron for lunch and a book swap.  Good times were had by all!

The RCBP invaded Barnes & Noble again.  This time, we were not the largest or loudest group present!  There was a group of students that slowly trickled in and were taking up half the cafe by the time we left. 

We were, however, the funnest group there.  Books were traded, including wishlist books.  And there was cake.  Yum! 

 
Look for some upcoming projects from the RCBP which may include a podcast or vodcast.

First, there was confusion.  It was agreed we should meet for Mexican food, but which restaurant?  A choice was made, but upon driving by the location it was discovered that the Mariachi’s in Fairlawn had transformed into a Cleats.  So a flurry of last minute communication brought the Rubber City Book Posse together at Mariachi Coco’s in the Valley. 

The food was good. The service was friendly. The conversation was diverse. Books were exchanged. And everyone who came got an extra surprise: a bag with chocolate, a pen, a pad of paper, and a magnet.
